On a happier note, the fact that France wanted to be ruled by the Queen is kind of cool! Imagine how different the world would have been if Britain and France were the same country: The United Kingdom of Great Britain, France and Northern Ireland. Lol. I think it would have had a fabulous positive effect on our culture. Oh well, never mind, we can go and sample what we missed by going there on holiday!

Kidnap to Adoption?
This is very strange indeed, and makes for very uncomfortable reading. What the article does not do is try to offer an explanation why on earth the boy did not do something about his situation, given that he was as far from a captive as he could have been. But then if he was happy where he was, as he seemed to be, I feel very uncomfortable that he was returned to his family - did anybody ask him? Perhaps he didn't want to go home, and enjoyed his life with Mr Devlin, only for his world to be shattered by the cavalry. I'm probably wrong, but I can't help thinking this.

I know what you mean. The whole story seems very strange. However, I can see two good reasons why he was returned. Firstly, as we both know, parents have rights too (I assume it's the same in America). Secondly, there's the problem of emotional attachment between captors and captives, which means that he may not have been as well-adjusted as he seems.
That French story is stranger still - I expected it to be something from about the eighteenth century when I clicked the link! It's funny how you don't care whether you "own" NI, but you do when it's France!
I'm tempted to suggest that you wrote this at 8:10am to show off how early you got up this morning, but I won't...
:-( You saw right through me...
And in any case, NI is smaller than France, and I hardly think that owning it has really dramatically changed the culture of this country, nor in fact the whole political picture of the world - imagine: there'd only be four vetoes on the UN Security Council!!
Also, blogger is very thpeshthial, and kindly emails me to say that some rapscallion called Siôn Hudson has commented on my post...yeah, thanks, somehow I already KNEW THAT!!
Conversely, it doesn't email me when you reply to my comment, mainly because it's not treated as a reply. So LiveJournal does have some advantages...
